“Reading is to mind what exercise is to the body.” These are the words by Richard Steele, a former member of the United States Marine Corps and famous boxing referee about his opinion towards reading.
Reading is a part of everyday in our school life. I’m sure that each of us knows the benefits of reading, but do all of us get the joy out of reading? Allow me to share with you my passion for such an activity.
To start with, my favourite place during my days at high school is the library. Each time I enter a library, it is like entering a little world with shelves and shelves of books stacked neatly upon each other, waiting for readers to savour them.
In my point of view, reading a book is equivalent to watching a movie. Some of you might ask, “Why is that so?” This is because every time I flip open a page of fiction, an image of the characters and the settings of the story forms in my head. In that way, we can be more imaginative and creative. What’s more, you’ll realize that there is always a little “question mark” at the end of each chapter, creating suspense in the story and thus, persuading us to continue to the next chapter. The same reason goes to soap operas and that’s why people end up with their eyes glued to the television or a book.
As a bibliophile, I have a cupboard full of books in my house, consisting of various genres, mostly mystery and horror. Now, if you have a thing for fiction, I’m sure you’ll have your own favourite genre. There are different genres to choose from in the world of books. An excellent example is the Harry Potter series. These Harry Potter books written by J. K. Rowling are classified as fantasy fiction, whereby they bring readers to another new world, the world of magic. By seeing the world from someone else’s eyes, this creates an impact on the reader, making it an unforgettable experience.
People say “Knowledge is the key to success”. By reading, we can learn new things and skills as well, as this adds to our general knowledge. Who knows, maybe this knowledge will bring benefit to us some day in the future. Here, I would say that non-fictions and encyclopedias are one of the most reliable sources to increase our knowledge.
To enjoy the entire process of reading, it is important to read something which is of one's liking, whether it is a magazine, a paperback or a novel. By doing so, we would not get bored easily or end up forcing ourselves to continue flipping the pages until the end.
By reading, we don’t only spend our time beneficially, but also have fun and improve our language as well. Just make sure that you have a balance between fiction and non-fiction in your reading.
