Congratulations on starting your own business! You've been working hard, you've put in many hours. You have a great mind, a great product and a keen sense for finance and business. And yet, somehow, you aren't making any sales or finding any new clients. What's going wrong -why can't you get anybody to commit to you or what it is that you want to sell? Sadly, even though you might be a brilliant business person, unless you create a good first impression you aren't ever going to get anywhere with your business. Here is how to make sure that your first impression is a positive one.
Take proper care with all of your written communications. This is particularly important as someone who might be trying to make a go of doing business online. Remember that, before a person gets to know you (and even after they have gotten to know you), it is difficult to make sure that your personality comes across in an email or letter. It is much better to err on the side of caution, professionalism and straightforwardness. Pretend that everything you are writing is going to be read by a judge later. Get the details across; refrain from emoticons and jokes. Save the jokes and the humor and metaphors for in person communication.
Don't spend a lot of time checking your watch or looking at a clock on the wall. Don't continuously check your phone to see what time it is. If you keep looking at the time, the other person will think that you are bored. If you are pressed for time or need to make sure that your meeting only takes a certain amount of time, set a vibration alarm on your phone and put your phone in your pocket. Then, until that alarm goes off, give the other person your full attention. Don't rush the conversation, but let it flow naturally. Then, wrap things up as gracefully as possible and, if you want or need to keep talking to them, set up another meeting.
Don't forget to thank the person for taking the time to talk to you and to leave them with your business card. This way the meeting will end on a positive note, and they will have something to remember it by. It also means that they will be more likely to contact you in the future because they will have your information handy. Do this even when the meeting happened spontaneously. These two things when done together can create a very positive and professional impression of you.
There are so many things that go into creating a successful business. Not all of those things can be done anonymously though. The most important thing that you can do if you want your business to be successful is to make sure that you always create a positive impression on the people you meet. These tips can help you make sure that you do that.
