Sore throats are not always soothed away with lozenges, sprays, and medicine. Sometimes you need to use natural herbs and honeys to help soothe and heal a sore throat right up. One of the best homemade syrups to make for a sore throat is thyme and honey syrup. Thyme and honey both contain natural antibiotics in them to help fight infections, relieve inflammation, and soothe a sore throat so it doesn’t sting, itch, or burn when you swallow.
The ingredients you will need to make the thyme and honey syrup are 1 cup of boiling water, 1 tablespoon of dried thyme, ½ cup of honey, and ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice. Do not use lemon juice that comes in those little yellow lemon juice bottles. Squeeze a couple of fresh lemons and get the juice from that because it contains more vitamins and antioxidants the body needs. You can find all these ingredients in your grocery store or kitchen.
The way you make the homemade thyme and honey syrup is by taking the 1 cup of boiling water and placing the dried thyme directly in it and allows the thyme to steep and soak in it for 20 minutes. If you are allergic to thyme you can use dried chamomile leaves instead, or rosemary. Once you have soaked the dried thyme in the boiling water strain the thyme out and pour the thyme water into a small sauce pan. After place the ½ cup of honey and ¼ cup of lemon juice into the sauce pan with the thyme water and boil them together for 1 minute. After you should have golden syrup with a sweet lemon and thyme scent to it. You can pour the syrup into a small glass jar and store it away in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it, or you can sip on the syrup while it is still warm. I personally like to syrup on the syrup when it is still warn because it soothes my throat even more.
Now when you have a sore throat and need to soothe the discomfort from it all you need to do is swallow down 2 to 3 tablespoons of the homemade thyme and honey syrup 3 to 4 times a day, or as often as needed. The syrup will help coat your throat and soothe away and pain, itching, or burning sensation you may have in it. The thyme, honey, and lemon juice will help give your immune system a boost to help fight the infection or inflammation that is causing your throat to hurt. You may also take this homemade thyme and honey syrup to help relieve dry or wet coughing, chest congestion, and postnasal drip.
However, before taking this thyme and honey syrup make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in it, and make sure it is right for you to take by first talking to your doctor. I would also recommend that you do not give this homemade syrup to young children below the age of 6 since small children can sometimes have bad reactions to honey and herbs. If you find out this is good way to treat and soothe your sore throat natural go ahead and make a batch of the syrup up and take it.
I hope this homemade thyme and honey syrup recipe helps soothe your sore throat away. I know it worked well for mine and I will continue to use it in the future to treat my sore throats. I do hope you all feel much better soon.
