Hip bursitis is more common in women than it is in men. It is also more common in middle aged or senior citizens. Although anyone any age can develop it. To check for the condition your doctor will do an exam. After that if they need more information then they will do an x-ray, MRI or CT scan to rule out other conditions and to confirm this diagnosis. It may be hard to sleep on the side that has the bursitis.

Treatment is usually NSAID medication to help with the inflammation, stop doing whatever is making the pain worse if possible, heat or ice therapy may be helpful. Sometimes they will give you a steroid injection into the hip and these are usually helpful. If your hip bursitis is severe and not responding to treatment then surgery may be an option.
