Many people run a business from a small apartment. It takes good organization and a little creativity but it can actually work very well. A corner of the living room or dining cubby can be fitted with a desk and shelves. There are colorful baskets, leather boxes or clear plastic containers to hold all office supplies. Take a look around your apartment and see if it works for you.

Do you have a business and only a small apartment to run if from? It can be done with good planning. Think about the space you have and how to use it to your best advantage. Don’t scatter office supplies all over the apartment. Stake out a place as office space. Your living room or dining area should be your first choice. The bedroom should be a private place for rest and sleep. Look at a corner in the living room or dining cubby where you can place a desk for computer, printer and phone with a wall on each side for wide shelving.

Divide the shelves in sections for cubbies, leather boxes are nice for office supplies or use wire or woven baskets. You can also use clear labeled plastic containers to see exactly what you need. Place the desk facing the room to have easy access to your supplies and you’re ready to go. If you want to separate your work space from the rest of the room, use a screen to keep it out of sight. Be very creative with storage space.

A small apartment cannot handle large pieces of furniture, so use smaller compact pieces. Don’t buy a large overstuffed couch or any other large items to make your room feel cramped. Rather than a large over sized entertainment center, use a smaller cabinet as tall as possible to store your videos, cards, board games and other items. Tailored upholstery and exposed legs rather than chunky ruffled pieces will make your apartment look bigger.

Neutral colors create a feeling of calm and space. If you have enough room for a window seat, they are great for storage besides making perfect seating. And don’t be too serious, place your special things around the room to see and enjoy. Whatever you do, don’t let clutter accumulate. Less stuff means less to organize and less money spent. It also means a peaceful more comfortable home. Don’t let incoming mail take up space, Take care of the important stuff and shred junk mail immediately.

You will continue to rethink and find ways to improve your space as time goes on. There’s much to be said for living in a small apartment. It takes less money to furnish, energy bills are much lower, and with good organization you can live very comfortably. Take it from a person who lives in a small apartment.
