Global warming is alarming in the world and glaciers are melting, if soon no alternative is used to control global warming then it would become impossible to save glaciers in the coming years. With many pros, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) engineering technology is found very important in some way, but it has many cons.
CCS program prevents carbon from polluting environment by collecting carbon through fossil fuel power plants instead of releasing into the atmosphere, and transporting it to suitable injection sites by pipelines, where it can be stored for indefinite period. Stored carbon can be transformed into deep geological formations, deep ocean masses, or in the form of mineral carbonates. This process will help to prevent 80% to 90% of carbon emission, and control global warming; so many countries are implementing it.
CCS technology requires much energy, it will consume 25 percent of the plant's energy for completing process, and other procession of CCS program will raise the cost of power production up to 50%. Price will rise much more if injection sites of storing the carbon were farther. It will become burden on power plant.
Collected carbon has to be stored for long time on high pressure, unexpected leak from the storage or accidental leak into the atmosphere will repeat the worst tragedies like Bhopal Gas tragedy of India, Mile Island tragedy of USA or Chernobyl Tragedy of Russia. This will germinate terrible crisis.
Transforming collected carbon into deep ocean masses will raise the acidity in sea level (ocean acidification) that will affect marine biodiversity, transferring it into deep geological formations or mineral carbonates will change the chemical structure of minerals in the earth causing serious ecological crisis.
CCS technology is less useful and more harmful and not a good alternative in comparing to other alternative. Best alternative is the use of natural resources like wind power, solar power etc instead of fossil power plants, this will automatically help to decrease the global warming without using any other costly technology.
