Goose berries are fleshy green colored fruits grown in the tropical countries. They are grown on big trees. There are many forests where these trees are found in abundance in India. Well this is a tree which bears fruits with many advantages to man kind, these treesare commonly grown in gardens and farm houses now a days in India. Indian Government is supplying the saplingsfree of cost to encourage the plantation of this tree at various residential places to reap the benefits.
The fruits are about the size of a lemon, though some varieties are small in shape. They are sour to Bitter in taste and locally in India we refer them as Amla (a Sanskrit word).
In Hindi and Marathi we call them as Aawla.
This fruit is normally not eaten raw because of its sourness and bit of bitterness too! In spite of that I feel theremust be few others like me who relish the taste and have this fruit in raw form. There is an interesting fact about this fruit. After consuming this fruit if we drink water the water tastes very sweet,
Yes, I mean it ! You will feel you ae drinking water mixed with lot of Sugar! Hard to believe No? But it is the fact! One has to feel to believe it!
In India this fruit is used to prepare pickles.Murabba is another way of consuming this fruit where this fruit is allowed to soak itself in sugar syrup, after absorbing the sugar from the syrup, this fruit can be preserved for years together and it is very tasty to consume! This fruit after boiling in sugar syrup is dried in sunlight and have the shelf life of few months.
Goose berries are very good source for Vitamin C and it is an excellent source of anti oxidant, there by helps in increasing the body resistance against the infections when taken on regular basis.
Amla is having special importance in the Ayurvedic form of medicine as it is having several beneficial effects on the health. Chyavan Prash is one of the products by Ayurveda which is abundantly used in India by the young and old alike is prepared from this fruit! .
Constipation, Common Cold, Diabetes, Digestive Disturbances, Respiratory diseases are few ailments for which Amla is recommended by Ayurveda Doctors!
