Google’s search engine is guided more by commercial interests than users’ interests
Google should counter Apple effectively
Google is excited about the expected popularity of its new product Google+ which is expected to pose tough competition to other social networking sites and particularly to Facebook. On the other hand, it is worried about Apple’s lawsuits against its Android software. It does not know how to face this situation. Google should take the matter to the users. It should convince the public that Apple wants to dump its expensive products on the public and that is why it is filing many lawsuits against it. Public opinion will then turn against Apple even in USA and Europe. That will be a victory for Google. At the same time, Google should create as many patents as possible for its products.
You can operate Facebook and Google+ at the same time
Google+ has announced that users with bogus names will be booted off. This may drive away the people who introduce controversial matters in their writings in another name for fear of being caught. Google+ has added games to its network including the popular ‘Angry Birds’ by Rovio. Users are confused as to whether to switch over to Google+ or to remain with Facebook. There is no need to get confused. You can operate both without actually logging into both. First go to www.facebook.com/mobile, login to your account and on the right side of the page you will see an option to ‘upload via email’. Underneath the text, you will see your account specific email address and copy it. Now open Google+ and go to Circles. Click ‘add a new Circle’ and call it ‘Facebook update’. Click ‘add a new person’ and paste your Facebook account specific email address and save it with any name you like. Hereafter, whenever you update your status in Google+, simply add this Circle in your list and it will automatically post the same status to your Facebook also.
Google’s biggest ever deal
Google has decided to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. The deal will pit Google directly against Apple, its chief competitor. Google will be giving away its best selling Android software to other manufacturers. This is the first time Google is entering into hardware business. This is also Google’s biggest ever deal to acquire any company. Through this acquisition, Google will also be gaining wireless patents. Motorola shareholders will get $40 a share in cash. Both Boards have approved the deal. The patents that Google will be getting through this deal will enable it to compete against Apple’s iPhone.
Google could become the only mobile producer with Android
Even though the purpose of acquiring Motorola by Google was to compete against Apple, this acquisition will also strangely put Google into competition with players like Samsung, and Hutch who use Android in their hand devices. Even though Google has clarified that Android will be available to other manufacturers free of cost, as competition intensifies, this policy could change. Google may charge the mobile manufacturers a heavy amount for using its Android and may also charge loyalty in future. That could drive away players like Samsung and Hutch from Android, scouting for another operating system. Thereafter, Google will become the sole hardware player using Android. Its handsets will sell in millions, bringing millions of dollars revenue to Google. This is a masterstroke by Google. In one move, it is countering competition from Apple, its main competitor and at the same time, driving away the other players from the market.
But Nokia and Blackberry will remain in competition
But even after this is achieved, players like Nokia and Blackberry will remain as competitors to Google. This is because their operating systems are different. Nokia uses Symbian operating system now. But it has formed a deal with Microsoft to use the latter’s software in its handsets. Blackberry uses os operating system.
Google’s search results are guided by its commercial interests
In the US search market, Google has a share of 65%. Yahoo! has 16%. Microsoft has 14%. Google has high usage among students in the academic world. Google gets most of its revenue from search based advertising. In June, Google introduced a search feature called Instant Pages that gives Chrome browser users quicker connection from links on Internet query results, aiming to cut 2 to 5 seconds from the search process. But personally, I am not very satisfied about the search results that Google gives. For example, if I am searching for say a crossword software that I could download free of cost, I need to type the words “free download crossword software” in the Google search engine. The search results come fairly quickly in a matter of seconds. However, I am not able to get what I want from these results. Some sites may be offering a ‘free’ crossword software. But if I download it, only at the end I will find out that it is not after all ‘free’ and is only a trial software. On the other hand, sites like Yahoo, Rediff etc give me the results I want exactly. But these sites are not as popular as Google. I feel that if people change their habits and try other search sites, they will really get qualitative results that they have been searching for. Google does not throw up websites that give their software really free because that does not suit its commercial interests. Google may be making companies that have given advertisements to it to appear in the list of search results in order to earn more revenue. In other words, Google’s search engine is more guided by Google’s commercial interests than the user’s interests.
Apple fears Android
Google has acquired inventions from IBM in quest for more patents. Google tried to acquire the patents of the bankrupt phone equipment maker Nortel Networks Corp by making a $900 million offer. Google is a cash rich company with a cash of $39.1 billion in its coffers. But it did not succeed as it was outbid by its competitors. An Apple-backed group successfully bid it for $4.5 billion. Apple is scared of Android because Samsung has offered neck-to-neck competition to Apple in USA and Europe besides in Asian territory. Apple fears that Google Android tablets will overtake its iPad in five years. Currently Apple has a market share of 75%. Indian market growing
Internet base in India has touched the 100 million mark. It is fast growing as there is vast scope for further penetration. Online advertising has crossed Rs.1000 crore mark last year. With the launch of the 3G mobile services, further increase in internet users is sure to happen. I had written more than 3000 articles to about a dozen print media in India on topics like stock market, companies, banking, insurance, economy, international events, politics, sports etc. But now I have stopped writing to the print media and writing only to two or three websites which publish my articles. I am very happy. In the print media, only people in certain areas could read my article. Now I am receiving comments from all parts of the globe. Google is concentrating on India to increase its advertising revenues. Google’s net revenue in the first three months of the year jumped by 36% to $6.92 billion. Net income in the second quarter climbed to $2.51 billion. Google is optimistic on cloud computing in India. Indian government asked Google to block some web pages critical of the government. Such content removal requests from India were up 123% compared to last year. Google did not comply with these requests.
Chinese problems
In China, Google is unable to penetrate and have its say as there are conflicts between Google and Chinese government. Google has accused Chinese hackers of blocking the email and trying to steal gmail pass words. But in Latin American continent, Google has posted a 80% growth last year.
