Ghana Football: Wassaman United to test Asante Kotoko on Sunday

The Glo Premier League (GPL) continues this weekend in Ghana with the week 23 fixtures at all but one of the league centers as the competition heads to the final dash.

Leaders, Kumasi Asante Kotoko faces another stern test on Sunday when they travel to the Tarkwa TNA Park to face the might of relegation threatened Wassaman United in a David versus Goliath affair.

The Ghanaian top-flight football league is becoming interesting week-in-week-out, with some surprising results as team’s battle hard to take positions that would confirm their status in the premiership next season.

Wassaman United would therefore fancy their chances of causing an upset when they host the league leaders on Sunday, knowing a win would enhance their chances of beating relegation as they are involved in a tough battle to avoid the drop.

Kotoko had to dig deep to earn a home draw with New Edubiase United in their last game, and would need to improve on that performance if they hope to take anything out of this game with the stakes very high for both sides.

It will therefore be an interesting game to see with the points crucial to either side chances in the league this season with United trying to stay up as Kotoko chases a record 22nd league crown.

In other games on Sunday, Premier club Accra Hearts of Oak will seek to make it back-to-back wins in the league this second round when they welcome Wa All Stars to the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Phobians posted a slim 1 – 0 victory over Aduana Stars at Dormaa last Sunday, after failing to win in their five previous games, and can move to second position on the log with a win over All Stars who drew at home to Wassaman United in their last encounter.

New Edubiase United are the odds on favourites to collect the points when they host troubled Ebusua Dwarfs at Nana Gyamfi Park at Bekwai.

Heart of Lions are enduring one of their worst ever seasons since they joined the Ghanaian elite division, and their misery could be compounded by in-form Medeama SC who visit the Kpando Park.

Berekum Arsenal will seek to put their relegation worries behind them when they host Liberty Professionals at the Golden City Park. They need a win to enhance their chances of survival with seven games to end the campaign after this round of fixtures.

In the same soup are Bechem United who welcome Tema Youth to the Bechem Park knowing failure to pick all three points, could all but confirm their passage to play division one football next season.

The action this weekend starts on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium when Tudu Mighty Jets hosts Aduana Stars in a game they must win to stay clear off the relegation zone after enduring a very poor second round this season.

The game between AshantiGold and defending champions Berekum Chelsea, has been put back to Thursday, April 12, 2012 as a result of the latter’s involvement in the CAF Champions League this weekend as they clear their 2nd leg Second round fixture with Moroccan giants Raja in Casablanca holding a five goal lead from the first leg in Ghana.
