Africa’s club of the last century, Kumasi Asante Kotoko has opened a six point’s gap on top of the Ghanaian Premiership following the weekend’s round of league matches.
The Porcupines beat Liberty Professionals 2 – 0 at home and had other results going their way to take a commanding lead on top of the table with 13 games to end the season.
Goals in each half by Daniel Nii Adjei and Michael Mensah at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, handed Kotoko all three points as they go in search of their 22nd Ghanaian top-flight title.
The wins moves the Porcupines to 37 points after 17 games, and are looking good on fulfilling their promise of lifting this season’s Premiership crown.
Their closest rivals on the table, Hearts of Oak, lost grounds in the race for the title after failing to beat Bechem United at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra as their game with the relegation threatened side, ended goalless.
Hearts has 31 points from their 17 games played, and will need to get back to winning ways to mount a serious challenge for the title with games running out.
In other games played over the weekend, a late goal by Albert Gaisie handed All Stars all the spoils at the Wa Park where they beat Aduana Stars 1-0.
The win lifts All Stars to third on the table with 29 points, and they will be in confident mood ahead of their mid week trip to the Golden City Park at Berekum where they face Chelsea on Wednesday.
AshantiGold SC defeated Wassaman 2 – 0 at the Sekondi Stadium at Essipong with goals in each half by Didier Kore 26th and Mohammed Yakubu 72nd minute to lift the Miners to eight on the table with 23 points.
Wassaman with this defeat, have slipped to bottom on the ladder with 12 points, and are looking a sure bet for relegation unless they improve on their performance.
A first half goal by Nicholas Gyan handed Ebusua Dwarfs all three points at the Robert Mensah Stadium at Cape Coast where beat Medeama 1 – 0.
The defeat was Medeama's 10th of the season and it leaves them 10th on the log after 17 matches, with pressure mounting on their technical team headed by Bashir Harford to improve standards.
The league’s top scorer Emmanuel Baffour netted his 14th of the season as his side New Edubiase United beat Tema Youth 4 – 2 at Bekwai.
Asiedu Attobrah scored a brace for United with Bernard Ofori getting the other goal for the winners. Tema Youth’s goals were netted by Francis Narh.
Arsenal won the Berekum derby at the Golden City Park where they beat Chelsea 1 – 0 with Mohammed Abdulai getting the winner for the Ghanaian Gunners.
The defeat drops Chelsea who won the championship last season from third to sixth on the table and are now 10 points off the summit of the Ghana Premiership.
The Ghana Premier League continues in mid week with games on Wednesday and Thursday at all league centres nationwide.
