Traffic is that magic word when it comes to internet marketing. It doesn't matter what we are selling, or what we are doing online, without traffic all our efforts will be in vain. We can compare our online business to a normal retail business. If you are going to open a store down town you first have to find a suitable location. You could choose to go inside the mall and pay the higher rents but be assured of passing trade or foot traffic, or you can opt for a cheaper rental store out side on the street. The later option is tempting but you will offset your cheaper rent by a lower passing trade and so less business. So traditionally, business has depended on passing trade and especially retail business unless you are very specialist. Likewise, doing business online depends very heavily on traffic.

With our online business, we can move into the mall and pay the higher costs to get traffic by buying it in the form of advertising. One of the pay per click systems will deliver traffic easy enough and the amount of traffic is only limited by how much we are prepared to pay. The only benefit of this system is that you don't pay until after the click and you can set how many clicks you want each day. If you don't limit the number of clicks you get you could end up with a huge bill. Even though every click is getting a customer to your website which is want you want, they haven't bought anything yet. If you don't get enough of those customers to buy then you will be running at a loss. There is an art and skill in getting a pay per click promotion to pay so learn that first.

Otherwise we are stuck with the good old basic search engine optimization methods of getting traffic. At least when we get this traffic it is free so maybe that is the best way to go. It will take a little longer to set up but in the long run, if your traffic is sent to you by the search engines for nothing you are laughing. So learn your keyword skills and start getting some links to your site. Write some articles and get your website link out there. There are tons of methods that you can use and none will do it on their own but if you combine many of these methods they will all knit together and get you listed high on the search engines.

So time to do some reading and learn some techniques. There is plenty of free stuff out there so do some searching and learn the industry. Once you have it all down pat you can start to implement it on your site and build a prosperous business.
