Freelancer.com Review, Scam, Complaints and Drawbacks

Freelancer.com is one of the online freelancing companies out there which have a mass following of thousands of employers and freelancers. At present you can surely claim that freelancer.com is undoubtedly the biggest online freelancing site in the world.

Here in this review I would like to point out various drawbacks the freelancer.com site has. Please note that I have nothing against the site myself. But this is an attempt to point out ht drawbacks for the site and get the site owners to understand them.

I can easily write a positive review of the site and may soon post one here. But in this one and in this series of articles I am looking at only the negative factors.

Top 7 Drawbacks of Freelancer.com

  • Improper customer care and service

Importance of customer care every online site needs is not truly apparent ere at freelancer.com

  • Procedure of suspending accounts ruthlessly

One other factor that has raised hues and cries is the procedure of suspending accounts even when the freelancer has money in their account.

  • Affiliate commission factor only for 3 months

Affiliate commission in most of the sites is paid life time. But here the revenue just comes to you in the first 3 months.

  • Taking project fees in an unorganized way

The method of taking the project fees from the freelancer is the greatest defect in the system of freelancer.com

  • No internal currency converter for the site

This system is really headache when dealing with the international professional and employers.

  • A faulty rating system

The rating system is designed such that any person can make another guy pay the brunt of his mistake at freelancer.com

  • Higher number of spam biddings

You will clearly see the number of biddings that comes up online for any job posted. Beware most of them seems to be just spam.

I won two projects on Freelancer. One accepted my bid for $30.00, then expected ten pieces of work to be rewritten for just $5.00, and if I took the work, I would have been charged five dollars so would have done it all for nothing.

One accepted my offer of $50.00 and then changed the terms afterwards and announced he wanted 100 articles and not the one stated in the description.

I was less than impressed with the customer service and haven't bid on any of their projects since.

Hi deepakp118. I came across your post here and we appreciate the feedback.
I'd like to take the time to address your concerns.

Freelancer.com continuously works to improve our support in order to provide the best customer experience. Even though we have more than 3.6 million users on our site, we assure you that we treat each and every customer concern with professionalism and utmost respect for users. Whenever a user contacts us for support or enquiries, our customer support teams strive to be as helpful as possible to get their issues resolved as soon as possible. Freelancer does have a forum called Tycoon Talk. It’s where you can post topics, ask questions, and share your knowledge. You can use your Freelancer.com account to log in to TycoonTalk. Also, we take suggestions publicly at our Facebook Fan page.

We will only freeze or suspend accounts to further validate a user’s identity or ascertain the nature of the transactions made through our site. Be assured that the funds in suspended accounts are not going anywhere. They will find it there once they’ve gone through account verification and their account issues are resolved. These procedures and policies are in place to create a safe environment for freelancers and employers.

You mentioned our Affiliate Program. We believe that the Freelancer.com Affiliate Program is generous. Affiliates can earn passive income through banners, feeds and links on your blog, site or social media.Affiliates can also earn as much as 90% of project commissions and 10% of items sold on Freemarket. We invite you to visit the Freelancer.com Affiliate page for more details. We’ve taken into account your feedback about our Affiliate program and Freelancer.com will endeavour to make it even more attractive in the future.

We believe we have one of the most organized fee structures for an online outsourcing site. We’ve been transparent about it and we list them clearly throughout the site. When new users have registered, we bring them to our membership page where we present all of the available features (both free and paid) and the fees that come with it. It’s listed in our Terms and Conditions (TOC) and in our Freelancer FAQ, specifically the Employers and Membership Plans, Payments and Billing sections . We also have more information on fees and charges on our Howtos & Articles Page.

We’d like to assure you that Freelancer.com allows users to convert money on the site. Please go to the Finances Menu of the site and click on the Convert Currency .

As to your concerns about our rating system, the Freelancer.com User Reputation System is still by far the best way to gauge an Employer or Freelancer’s reliability. We recommend that you dig deeper into the user’s profile, see how much thought they have put into their profile, how good their communication and how detailed they were in their proposal. Remember, the more detailed and specific the projects are, the better.

In addition, we’re glad to report that we still have one of the largest pools of proven and very qualified freelancers and reputable employers. There are many great quality projects for you to bid on Freelancer.com

Be assured that Freelancer.com works continuously to improve our services and features and we have dedicated teams to scour and scan for dubious accounts and users.

Should you have further enquiries, please send an e-mail to customer-support@freelancer.com and we’ll address them promptly.

Thank you very much.

Freelancer = you are joking = Matt Barrie has lost touch with what is happening on his site - he needs to take control again or the bad press will just keep pouring in about the way the site is run and staffed!!!

It is lie, Freelancer is the worst freelance job site.
Their customer service is a scandal! They just use some generic answers, copy-pasted stuff.

it isn't a lie. I've used Freelancer myself and won a number of projects. Wrote great proposals (I never knew I could be that eloquent), did the jobs and it's been awesome ever since. And I dealt with their customer support as well and they're pretty helpful. Even helped me ban a scammer at the site. It really helps to be courteous as well.

Freelancer is about to scam by end of 2012 or early 2013, through reliable internal resources it has been revealed that due to many acquisitions and merger, freelancer.com management is in sever financial crisis and also is on a check by US government due to money laundering issues. so, freelancer.com is finding it hard to match with the requirements, have taken back support totally to their old address i.e. Support.getafreelancer.com, and also not providing online 24/7 support, Please beware that its about to scam anytime, withdraw ur earning if u ve any there and also find the new freelancing website.

I thought it was only some black PR, but did some research and inquries. Not saying it will but recommend to:
1. Avoid having money deposited on Freelancer.com
2. Cancel the PayPal/credit card link with Freelancer.com
