Freelancer.com Review - project fees system
One of the biggest drawbacks of freelancing your work through freelancer.com is particularly the fact that you need to pay a project fees per work to the freelancer.com site.
Of course it is acceptable and is common with any site that provides similar facility. You are getting direct contacts with some of the most prominent freelancers or employers through freelancer.com. So for that service you need to pay them. Every freelancer and employer understands that and is ready for that.
But the situation changes by considering the way freelancer.com takes the project fees. Suppose you get a 30$ project confirmation from an employer and you are happy that you have got a work after searching for some time. Now you will see that a certain fees will be deducted from your account at freelancer.com. If you had uploaded money or if you had some account balance out there, you will lose the project fees to freelancer.com.
All is well. You now complete the work and ask the employer to pay you. Normally they do and you are happy. But suppose the employer do not pay you- what happens? You will not be paid for the work you did but you would have paid the project fees to the freelancer.com. There are provisions to lodge the complaints against the employer, but that would be a long and tedious process.
So the end line is just this freelancer.com takes the project fees from you even if you are not paid by the employer. You lose the money either from your prevailing account balance or from your uploaded money (to freelancer.com).
This is one area where the freelancer.com needs to change their approach on.

Hi deepakp118. Emir from Freelancer.com here. I came across one of your posts here again. As always, we appreciate your feedback.
Again, I’d like to take some time to address your concerns.
It is is possible to get a project fee refund for jobs that have been awarded already but cancelled by the employer. For these cases, all the user needs to do is to submit a ticket and ask for a refund.
But we'd like to remind users that the project fee refund is still subject for approval. Our support teams will work on the request and do their own investigation. Once we’ve established that the employer no longer wishes to continue with the project, we will release the refund.
Before bidding on projects, we recommend users to check the employer’s reputation. Dig deeper into the employer’s profile, and see how much effort they’ve put into their project listing, how thoroughly they have described the project, and if they have provided additional documentation to help you understand the project. Freelancer.com offers a number of tips on how to become a succesful freelancer. Please visit Freelancer.com and go to the Help Section and click on Howtos & Articles.
We’d like to thank you again for your suggestions and recommendations and be assured that we’ve taken them into account and we will continue to improve on what we do.
Would it not be more appropriate to take your charge once the employer has paid. That would reduce the need for time consuming investigations, and have a more positive impact with designers. Something to look at for the future I think.
That is a good suggestion and Freelancer.com hopefully will look into this concept.
