A daft ditty inspired by my favourite Saturday evening dinner – something brought back from the chippie!

Note: this is written in a slightly tongue-in-cheek Scots dialect. I’m sure you’ll be able to work out what most of it means easily enough, though one thing might have you stuck: mealy (or mealie) pud. Mealy means oatmeal and a mealy pudding is a thick sausage of suet, oatmeal and onion. When sold at a chip shop it’s covered in batter and deep fried and is more often called white pudding. It’s quite similar to black pudding, but doesn’t contain the blood that makes black pudding black.

Fish'n'Chips

Fish’n’chips, fish’n’chips,
Maks ye fairly smack yer lips,
Dis fish’n’chips.

Mealy pud, mealy pud,
Nithin’s even half sae good,
As mealy pud.

A ticky salt an’ loads o’ sauce,
Then in a paper baggie toss,
Ye dinnae like? Weel that’s yer loss,
Leaves mair fer me,
‘Cos I can eat enough fer twa,
Jist ye see!

Loved the way you say it, Bruce, this recipe. Yay.

I had heard a lot about Fish n Chips and always wanted to try it. Finally got my chance and it turned out to be pretty good. I guess its different in different places.

Thanks!

Hi it was nice poem but what is meaning of mealy pud?

I explained that in the paragraph before the start of the poem: "...a mealy pudding is a thick sausage of suet, oatmeal and onion."

Oh, and it is delicious, if not very good for you!

nice poem, got everything except the mealy pud as you said.

I LOVE mealy pudding!

I am not a native but I love fish and chips. Am cutting back on the chips though and the fish I take off the delicious batter(most of it!) for calorie considerations. And I love Ale, beer, whatever! Oh I could live on fish, chips and beer, forever. But then I feel the same about bolognaise/lasagne and wine!

Good work. Thank you for share

that's so cute!

That's so cute! I really like the rhythm of the words.

Black pudding and white pudding are also found over here in the traditional Newfoundland diet. I haven't had black pudding in years, but white pudding fried to a crisp, golden brown is one of my favourite breakfast treats.

I haven't heard of it being deep fried before. I'd certainly like to try it.
