First Black Female U.S. Presidential Nomination
Hilary Clinton is credited for being the first female running for nomination as President of the United States by many of today's youth, uninformed world citizens and or non political minded individuals. But that is not accurate information. Nevertheless, Clinton acknowledges that it was a black women's accomplishments that would help her to run for becoming a Presidential candidate. Ironically, the woman, Shirley Chisolm held the Senate seat in the 1960's that former First Lady Hilary Clinton now holds.
Shirley Chisolm was was born November 30, 1924 and lived until January 1, 2005. She became the first black congresswoman and represented New York State in the House for seven terms. In 1972, she made a historic move to run for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. It would be in 1983 that she finally left politics to lecture and teach.
She was born as Shirley St. Hill and spent part of her childhood in Barbados staying with her maternal grandmother. It was from Brooklyn College in 1946 that she would obtain her first degree, but at Columbia University where she would get a Master's degree in elementary education. One of her jobs before going into politics was as director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center from 1953-1959. When she left that position she worked as an educational consultant to New York City's Bureau of Child Welfare for five years beginning in 1959. It would be only another five years before Shirley Chisolm would take the title of the first black congresswoman. Her assignment was initially as representation of the House Forestry Committee, but she made demands of reassignments that was unheard of during those times.
Here reassignment categories of being a House representative included, Veterans' Affairs Committee before placement in the position to the Education and Labor Committee. As a result of her accomplishments and vision, she became one of the founding members of the Congresssonal Black Caucus in 1969, three years before she would bid for a chance to compete for the President of the United States as a nomination.
