I had some fond memories of catching fireflies with my grandfather when I was a kid.  I wrote this poem to relive my childhood experience.  Each time I remember my grandfather, I can't help but reminisce the memories I had about fireflies.

When I was about 9 years old, my family and I spent our summer vacation in my mom's hometown in Leyte. Such was an experience I will never forget. I was so delighted to see right before my eyes the beauty of fireflies glowing and sparkling like stars as they flew.

Facts About Fireflies

Fireflies are winged beetles also known as lightning bugs. These insects live in warm areas and are a familiar sight on summer evenings. They have light organs located under their abdomens. They take in oxygen and, inside special cells, combine with a substance called luciferin to produce light with no heat. Fireflies flash in different patterns, and each pattern conveys a signal that helps them find their potential mates. Firefly lights also serve as defense mechanisms from predators. This poem relives my childhood. Sometimes, it makes me feel I want to be a child again and bring back those times when my grandpa was still alive. I had fond memories of him, one of which is this firefly story. I hope you enjoy reading this poem.

My First Time To See Fireflies

Once upon a summer night
When I was just a little child
I saw some bright twinkling lights
Flying, dancing to my delight

Their little lamps did aglow
Falling stars as I have known
But my grandpa told me so
They were fireflies I should know

I Wished I Could Catch Them

Winged beetles or lightning bugs
They flew so fast and were hard to catch
They throve in forests, rivers, and muds
In bushes, trees, as well as ponds

I wished that I could chase them
And touch their tiny wings
I wondered though if they would burn
My soft and fragile little hands

I asked my grandpa if he had time
To spare with me at least one night
To chase some cute little fireflies
And take them home and make them mine

We Chased The Fireflies

A little jar was then prepared
Holes were punched on lid for air
To catch some fireflies then we went
And waited for sunset by the riverbend

Twilight then started to creep
Trees and bushes suddenly lit
As tons of fireflies started to blink
And twinkled like magic tricks

Grandpa waved the net he brought
Caught some fireflies as much as he could
Then we headed home with a glowing jar
I felt as if we caught some stars

As I reminisce the childhood I had
Fireflies bring back memories a lot
I wish this day grandpa's still alive
To catch with me some pretty fireflies
