India has got one of the strongest defence and armed forces in the world. India is 3rd in the number of military personnel after China and USA. Here are some facts about Indian Defence.

  • Indian Army is the 2nd largest army in the world in terms of personnel.
  • Indian Navy has 7th place in the world.
  • Indian Airforce is the world's 3rd largest Airforce. 'Touch
  • The President is the Supreme Commander of the Armed forces.
  • General Sam Manekshaw was the first to get the Field Marshal rank, the highest rank in army.
  • The Ezhimala Naval Academy in Kerala is the largest of its kind in Asia.
  • Param Veer Chakra is the highest military honour in India.
  • Assam Rifles, formed in 1835, is the oldest paramilitary force in India.
  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is one of the most important firms in the Indian defence sector. It was formed im 1948.
  • Indian Navy's INS Prahar is the fastest missile boat in the world.
  • INS Vikrant was the first of aircraft carrier of India. It was commissioned in 1961 and retired in 1997.
  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, formed in 1948, is the largest defence firm in public sector.
  • BrahMos is a stealth supersonic anti-ship cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia. It is named after rivers Brahmaputra and Moscow.
