The reason that I ask this question is because I number of my friends met their current partner through Facebook. Getting chatting to people who the have mutual friends with. This is happening so much that I’m starting to think of Facebook as some sort of dating website.

I regularly get added by people who I barely know, we talk for a while. I’ve even had a couple of people ask me out even though we’ve never met. Normally this would creep me out but because you can see the friends you have in common you can easily go to them for a background check before taking things further.

I’m not suggesting using the site to say your looking for love, but if you are looking for that special someone Facebook could be used as an alternative to dating sites. I probably have at least 10 friends on Facebook who had added me simply because me met briefly and/or have the same circle of friends.

Facebook will never and should never be used as a normal dating site. But I few messages and pokes could lead to a romance that you never expected, and if you don’t get along with the person you can simply delete them.

That's not its intention, but any site that encourages you to meet new people with whom you either have common interests or mutual friends is likely to result in romantic relationships being formed there, as much as platonic friendships.
