The English language is make up of three tiers, Anglo-Saxon, French and Latin. Our language has more words than any other language in the world. We have more than a million words in our vocabulary and 50,000 new words are added every year. Is it any wonder the English language is a challenge to the native and non native alike. But how wonderful that we have all these words to express ourselves.

English boasts a far greater number of words than all languages. Just look at the number of words for quick, there is, fast, speedy, rapid, swift, and how many more can you think of? All meaning the same thing. Today the English language contains more than a million words and adds an average of 50,000 words every year. What an opportunity it offers for writers to express themselves in so many diverse shades of meanings. It can also be a challenge to natives and non-natives alike with the wide variety of English words available to us.

Anglo-Saxon is the foundation of the English language, although we have a three tiered vocabulary of Anglo-Saxon, French and Latin. And wonderful for us, with all these words we have a fountain of words to express ourselves. With the directness of Anglo-Saxon we can see ourselves more truly. The courtliness of French lifts us to a more literary level of expression and the Greek and Latin arouses our minds to complex thinking.
