All of us would like to know the secret to achieving success when making money online especially those who are new to the online world of making money. It is what every one who's online to make money would spend time and money to discover.

All of us would like to know how Google's Larry Page did it and how Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook, became the youngest billionaire. How do these people become such a success with making money online while the rest of us struggle to even earn $10 a month?

I've asked these questions numerous times when I see how miserable I make each month online compared to these successful Internet giants. It's not easy to seek the answers to these questions but it's not impossible either.

There are of course one thousand and one methods to make money online but whether you would call yourself successful or not will depend on a number of factors. And it will also depend on your definition of success. Some people would not be satisfied if they don't earn at least $1000 a week while there are those who feel that they are successful if their website gets to the first page of Google search engine results page (SERP).

Your definition of success may not be the same as mine or another person but in order for you to achieve the success that you want in making money online, you need to have the mindset of a successful person like Mark Zuckerberg or Larry Page. That is what will distinguish you from the successful Internet marketers and the ones that are only getting by.

1. Motivation

What was it that make you decide to go online to make money? Was it for financial independence? Or was it because you wanted to quit your day job so that you can have more time with your family? What drove Mark Zuckerberg to create Facebook? He is very good at what he does because he's extremely motivated in what he's doing. So you too need to find that sort of motivation that will push you toward your ultimate goal. Even if you don't want to become as rich as Mark Zuckerberg, you need to always keep the desire fired up. Always remember why you take the online path to make money so that you can keep yourself motivated and this will lead you to success.

2. Focus

There are countless of opportunities to make money online. You can blog, sell other people's products as an affiliate, sell your own products and many more. No matter what your chosen path is, you need to stay focus. You need to choose one method and focus all your energies into making it a success. Don't try to do too many things at the same time because you won't be able to put much effort into any one of the things that you're trying. And in the end you will not succeed at anything at all.

Choose one method and concentrate on that for at least six months. For example, if you decide to start blogging. Do it for six months. Remember to blog on one very specific topic like dog training or parenting a teenager. Then monetize your blog with Google Adsense. Post regularly; at least once a day. Drive traffic to your blog and then at the end of the six months, you can decide if blogging is profitable for you. If it wasn't, don't throw in the towel immediately. Assess what you've done wrong and try to address the situation. Perhaps you've chosen a topic that is too competitive or too narrow. Make adjustments and try again. Never give up.

3. Patience

Unfortunately, there are many people who go online with the idea that it's easy to make money online and that they will become rich like Mark Zuckerberg overnight. The truth is people who think that way make up the majority of Internet marketers who tried to make money online and failed and then blamed it on the program they are participating in. Making money online is not a get rich quick scheme. It took Facebook a few years before finally overtaking MySpace to be the most visited social networking website in the world.

It doesn't happen overnight. So you need to be patient. It takes time to drive traffic to your website and it takes time to build back links to your website. It also takes time for Google to find your website and index it and display it on the first page. Therefore, patience is a necessary attribute that you need to have in order to make it online. Without patience, you'll just give up when you don't see money in your bank.

4. Be willing to learn

Technology is constantly updated. What may be the trend today may be obsolete tomorrow. This is true with online marketing methods. Previously, it was enough for a website to contain search terms that are frequently searched by internet users even if the website has nothing to do with the search term. For example, search terms like sex and porn are two of the most searched terms. So, website owners would insert those search terms in their meta-tags even if they may be selling refrigerators. But search engines caught on so most search engines disregard meta-tags and look directly at the website copy.

Search engines like Google are regularly updating their search algorithms so you, as website owners, must constantly be updated and learn new ways to satisfy the new algorithms. You need to be willing to learn and not be left behind. This is important if you want to succeed at making money online.

5. Take action

Okay, you have the firey motivation, you're extremely focused with much patience and a willingness to learn, now is the time to take action. It's no use learning about what to do but not doing anything about it. If you know you have to write a blog post every day, do it. If you know you have to build links to your blog posts, do it now. Don't delay. Now is better than later. Take action and you will see the reward.
