Desktop or Laptop

Since microchips became small enough to allow mass production of portable computers, people became more and more interested in acquiring a laptop for their business purposes, or for personal use. People my want to know which device could be more useful for their needs: desktop or laptop.

Both types of computers can have many advantages, one over the other. The display size can be very big for a fixed platform. Of course that people can connect even a plasma television to a portable computer, but the size of the screen is a default option for a desktop machine. Most laptops are not bigger than fifteen inches when the screen diagonal size is involved. The keyboard can be too small, especially for gamers.

When a gaming solution is needed, laptops are not recommended. No matter how good the video card is, notebooks have the tendency of overheating and this may happen if a game is played with maximum details and a high resolution. There is an advantage for notebooks when it comes to playing games. Because the size of the display is small, there is no need for very high resolutions. Laptop video cards are many times limited and because of this, games run smoother in lower resolutions.

A regular computer has the advantage of providing a mouse to the user by default. Notebooks may not have a real mouse, but people can buy a special one that is designed for portable use and has a USB connection. A big keyboard can also be used in the USB port. Space is one of the things that many people gain if they buy a notebook. There are even smaller notebooks that have around seven inches of display diagonal and they fit well even in small bags. If a device is small enough, it can be carried anywhere and this is the main purpose of portable devices.

For home use people should acquire a desktop system, because this system can have a big monitor and play games, watch high definition movies, or play their favorite music, with the proper sound system attached. Any component can easily be changed in order to make upgrades to the computer and minimal knowledge is required. Notebooks can be limited when more performance is needed and their components may be harder to upgrade. For those who want performance, they can get it for larger sums of money, but mainly notebooks are good for travel, or for any active person.

The answer to the questions desktop or laptop could be: the first type of device is for home or for office use, while the other type is for people who are always in motion. An even more portable solution is the new tablet PC, which can be the most portable of all, and it can fit even in a pocket. Also, modern mobile phones are so advanced that are like mini table PC’s.
