Date Rape: How to Prevent It

In America alone, statistics show that there is a victim of date rape every couple of minutes. This is a scary trend. In most cases, the victim would not bother to report the matter to the police for fear of humiliation.

Court proceedings can also take years before handing out a conviction or acquittal. The defense would also try to attack the credibility and character of the victim in every way they can. The woman would have to account every detail in front of the judge and everybody in the courtroom what happened, which could be very embarrassing by any standard. For these reasons, thousands prefer to suffer in silence, carrying with them the burden of trauma and hatred for as long as they can.
 

Indeed date rape is very hard to get out of once a person has become a victim. The probability of being a victim can however be reduced by preventive measures. Here are some of them:
 

1) Don’t easily trust people you meet online. People who know the acts they want to commit would not be accepted by those they will meet every day will of course, try to look for victims online. So don’t go exclusively on a date with somebody unless you really know where he lives, his circle of friends, relatives, etc.
 

2) Watch your alcohol intake. If you ever go to a bar, you should control how much you drink. There is still a big percentage of men that thinks a drinking lady is one that is getting ready for intercourse. Also, be aware where your wine glass is. It is so easy to put drugs in it nowadays.
 

3) Let somebody know with whom you are going out. Tell somebody close to you where you will be going and what time you expect to come home. Do this in front of your date so he knows that somebody will be hunting him if somebody happens to you.
 

4) Always have that pepper spray ready. There is no better turnoff for a rapist than a woman who can prove that she can defend herself. If he keeps charging on, don’t hesitate to use your secret weapon.
Three factors are needed by crime to happen: the environment, the perpetrator’s capabilities, and the victims ability to defend herself. If you directly control two of these factors, there is a very big reduction in the chance for date rape will happen.
