Dangers of Head Banging
A craze that is as hold as the first rock concert has taken on a new fade by people now using it as a way to exercise, pass off stress and do what it was originally for, to swing the head around to hard core music and or dance music that calls for erratic movement. The issue with head banging is both obvious and hidden to the average person who doesn't understand how the brain is situated in the head cavity.
A concern for the head banging moves is that the neck can break and or a participant can end up with neck strain. There is also the possibility of getting off balance and hurting the spine or other part of the body through an unexpected fall. According to Dr. McIntosh, a biomedical and injury expert at the University of New South Wales, "To minimize the risk of head and neck injury, head bangers should decrease their range of head and neck motion, head bang to slower tempo songs by replacing heavy metal with adult oriented rock, only head bang to every second beat, or use personal protective equipment."
Now, it is not likely that concert goes any where especially after a few beers or shots of tequila or other alcohol for example are going to take out time to think about moving to any particular rhythm as detailed as the Dr. suggest. Nevertheless, there is one thing that all participants should be aware of when taking part in any head banging experience.
Blows to the head and or excessive rocking of the brain, like that in a roller coaster has been known to cause brain injury, unconsciousness and even blood hemorrhage in the brain due to the brain hitting the inside of the skull. One of the reasons Pediatricians are adamant not to shake a baby's head to erratically is because the brain moves back and forth in the head. It may seem as if it would be set in one place inside the skull, but it is not. It could be one reason why excess spinning make some people dizzy. It has something to do with the way fluid moves around in brain when one is moving abnormally in circles and or rocking back and forth repeatedly.
If you choose to indulge in head banging, you may want to do a bit of research of possible side effects. Be prepared to tell any health official you may need service for due to a head banging incident how long you may have been participating or if at all if you or someone out partying or simply playing around head banging, falls out or has any of the symptoms associated with hang banging which will help with any diagnosis during an incident.
