The Common Health Problem for Cats

Having a cat is more than just giving them food, bath and a place to sleep. Keeping them healthy is also a cat owner responsibility. There are a few things that can be a threat to the health of cats.

Feline leukemia

Once, feline leukemia was the biggest death cause among cats. The virus is highly contagious. As the animal medication getting advance, there are vaccines for cats to prevent them from infected by feline leukemia. To prevent cats from infected with this disease, give them a shot of the vaccines before they are exposed.

Urinary tract infection

Urinary tract infection is also common and it infects the urinary organ of the cats. It is most common among males cat though especially those that haven’t been neutered but it also can infected the female cat. Symptom of this disease is the cat’s urine smell very strong from usual. The cats that suddenly stop going to its litter box also might suffer from this problem to. If this symptom persists, go to the vet for medical treatment. It can easily been treat by medicine.

Worms

Worm is a very common problem among cats and also a recurring problem. The worms that can commonly infect the cat are tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms. The cats that had a problem with worm have problem in gaining weight. No matter how much they ate, they just cannot gain weight. If that problem persists, go to the vet and test the cats for worms. Worms can easily treated with medicine but can be fatal if untreated.

Hairball

Hairball happens when the loose hairs gather into a ball and lodged in the digestive tract. It happens as the cats groom themselves, the loose hair being swallowed. Normally the hairball can be dislodged by the cats just by cough and hack. But there are times when the hairball passes through the intestine and creating the blockage. This is when the problem can get serious and life threatening if untreated. Hairball can be prevented by brushing the cats’ hair to remove the loose hair. There are also foods available designed to control hairball.

Besides the entire health problem listed above, there are many things and disease can make cats unhealthy. It is advisable to always bring your cats to the vets for regular medical checkup.
