Every college campus has a security office. Some of the security departments are college run and staffed by security professionals hired directly as college staff and other colleges use a subcontracted security force but every campus does have some kind of security staff in insure your safety and to protect the staff and facilities of the campus.
Campus Security’s primary objective is to provide a safe environment that enhances the learning experience and the College's educational mission. The department is responsible for providing security, responding to medical and fire emergencies, traffic accidents, enforcement of campus rules and regulations, and various other services. Those other services vary from campus to campus.
Some of the services the campus security provides include: Enforcing state laws, town and city ordinances, including parking, speed limits, and traffic rules. They also patrol campus property and providing escorts to faculty, staff and students as requested. They may provide assistance with disabled vehicles with things like lost car keys, keys locked in the car and dead batteries for faculty, staff and students, They also assist students, staff and the general public with information and directions and Maintaining all fire safety equipment and alarms and they check all facilities for hazards and safety compliance.
Many colleges have a “silent witness” program where students can anonymously report suspicious or harmful actions and yet stay safe themselves. If your college has such a program, check it out so know what you can and cannot report and the procedures that need to be followed.
Campus security also provides information to help keep you safe. They issue campus wide alerts for any issues happening on campus that you should be aware of, they issue alerts for weather related problems, information on workplace harassmen and violence, threat harassestment techniques and issue public safety tips. Again, depending on the individual campus, there may be many more or less responsibilities under their guidance.
As a student, before the start of each semester, it is in your best interest to know where the campus security office is located, and to know where their postings are on campus as well as on the college website. Make sure you check them often and are aware of what is going on in and around campus.
Your college experience is one of the best times you will have in your life, creating many lifelong memories and friends. There are many other college safety tips available, to help keep your safe while on campus.
