Earlier in an article, I had expressed a doubt that whether the popularity of Cricket is preventing the growth of other sports in India. Although it's true in a way, there have been great achievements and the rise of new stars in other Indian sports recently. Yes, the face of Indian sports is changing, changing for good. From a time when sports equals to cricket in India, the country has gone miles forward. I'm not underestimating the status of Cricket in India here, but urging to look beyond it.
The signs of better future have started to show up. Kabbady, Athletics, Shooting, Archery, Boxing, Tennis, Basketball, Billiards, Badminton and Hockey are witnessing giant leaps forward. Even F1 seems to have found its foot here. Football is in a zig-zag situation, but the lineup of youngsters have given the team a high energy level.
Now we have superstars in every sporting items. Saina Nehwal is waving flags of victory in high profile Badminton tournaments. The Hockey team has qualified to Olympics after missing out at Beijing. Both the men and women Kabbady teams brought world titles to India. Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Boppanna are running well in Tennis. Abhinav Bindra is all set to continue his journey he started from Beijing in 2008. Vijender Kumar in Boxing, Susheel Kumar in Wrestling, Pankaj Advani in Billiards and Deepika Kumari in Archery, we have now superstars in almost every sports.
There is not too much distance left to London Olympics. If these stars shine there, India will witness its best ever show in Olympic history.
Go on people, the country is with you, do make us proud!
