The BlackBerry Curve 3G would be the BlackBerry for the budget-conscious. The BlackBerry Curve 3G looks like any other BlackBerry handset out there. The handset has full QWERTY keyboard below a 2.4 inch screen sporting a 2-megapixel camera. With 3G connectivity and Wi-Fi, the handset assures fast internet surfing while apps and themes can be easily downloaded from the BlackBerry App World.
The microUSB port sits beside the 3.5mm headphone connection and the left-hand convenience key that functions as the voice-dialer shortcut by default. You can easily change its function in the settings menu. The camera button is located on the other side of the handset, just under the volume controls.
The top panel sports the BlackBerry Curve 3G's media controls - play/pause, skip forwards and skip back. Connectivity is what it's all about and the BlackBerry Curve 3G features Wi-Fi and GPS together with its namesake 3G network.
Having devoted media buttons on the top of the handset, the BlackBerry Curve 3G is distinctly designed to be used as a media player, much like you would with am iPhone or a Sony Ericsson W395 Walkman phone. It's also a welcome sight to see a 3.5mm headphone jack that gives you the freedom of using headphones you prefer.
As expected from a BlackBerry handset, the Curve 3G boasts of email capabilities, and the BlackBerry Messenger for instant messaging other BlackBerry users.
Call quality and the overall reception are top notch. Having a screen that is relatively low in resolution allows RIM the ability to keep the cost of the handset down. Of course, for those media fanatics, it just won't make the cut.
Regrettably, the 2-megapixel camera is pretty restrictive. Likewise, the menu system and the onboard browser leave a lot to be desired until you can upgrade the software.
Being a mid-range handset, the BlackBerry Curve 3G has a fighting chance. If you want a reliable email machine with casual web browsing and media playback capabilities, this would suit you down without costing you an arm and a leg. Regarding the software update, it is easily obtainable from the BlackBerry website.
