Hair loss is a problem that many of us have to face at least once in our life. Castor oil is made of the castor plant's (Ricinus communis) seed, and is traditionally used for hair loss, skin problems, or as a laxative. Many people use the castor oil successfully to stop hair loss and support hair growth.
Hair loss can occur seasonally - many people notice that in specific time of the year they lose more hair than normally. You don't need to worry, unless the amount of hair you lose is too much. The number of the hair follicles we have depends on our hair type, but losing up to around 100 hair strands a day is considered normal. If you lose more than this, you might need to find the reason of your hair loss and treat it. Hair loss can be caused by stress, hormonal changes, medication, nutritional or vitamin deficiencies, anemia, thyroid problems, or other health problems. You should see a doctor if your hair loss doesn't stop, you will probably need to get at least a blood work done to find out the reason.
Castor oil can help to stop excessive shedding - although it doesn't mean that you can forget about treating the condition that caused it.
You can buy castor oil in most pharmacies, sometimes in supermarkets or drug stores too. It's a light yellow, thick oil. You can use it undiluted, but it will be more difficult to remove it that way, because it can be very heavy and sticky. It's easier to wash out and apply if you mix about 50% castor oil with 50% coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. Depending on the dryness of the scalp or hair and the way you apply it, you will probably need about 1-3 teaspoonsfuls of the oil mix.
Use the castor oil before washing you hair. Part your hair and use your fingers, a hair dye applicator or a cotton ball to apply the oil on your scalp. Repeat this until you find you used enough oil, then massage your scalp with your fingers. Leave the oil on for at least an hour, or even overnight before washing your hair.
Castor oil is not easy to remove from hair, so you will probably need a good clarifying shampoo, and shampoo twice instead of once. You can also try to cover your hair with conditioner for half an hour before washing, this should help removing the oil - just be careful, as conditioners, especially those that contain silicones, are generally not made to be used on the scalp. You can mix a drop of rosemary essential oil with the castor oil, this also makes it easier to remove.
Some people notice insreased shedding before the hair loss slows down. If you experience this, you have to decide whether you continue this treatment or stop it. It might take 3-6 weeks for the hair loss to slow down, and at least 6 weeks to stop, so you need to be patient. After this much time you should be able to see very short baby hair, the new growth. Some hair types allow you to use a few drops of oil even after washing hair, but if your hair gets greasy quickly, use it only before washing.
