President of the United States of America is the commander-in-chief of the military. He appoints the members of the cabinet (with approval from the Senate) and other officers who administer and enforce federal laws and policies. An American president serves a four year term. The first president, George Washington, took office in the year 1789. United States of America has been governed by 44 presidents.

Innumerable surveys have been conducted in the past based on parameters like achievements, leadership qualities, etc to determine the best presidents of the United States. Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Franklin Roosevelt feature among the top three in most of the surveys. These are the common names that feature in top five in most of the surveys:

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 - April 15, 1865)

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He is remembered for his immense contributions during the civil war. This preserved the Union during this period of crisis and ended slavery. He believed in democracy, nationalism, liberty and equal rights. He was assassinated. 

George Washington (February 22, 1732 - December 14, 1799)

George Washington led the Americans to victory over the British in the American Revolutionary war. He also presided over the writing of the constitution and became the first president of the United States of America. He is regarded as the "Father of the United States of America". 

Franklin D Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945)

Popularly known as FDR, he was the 32nd president of the United States of America. He led the nation efficiently through the world war and economic crisis of the 1930s. He was the only American president to be elected for more than two terms. He was a staunch believer in democratic principles.

Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 - July 4, 1826)

Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States of America. He is known for the promotion of the ideals of republicanism. He was the principle author of the "Declaration of Independence". He believed in giving more powers to the states and in limiting the federal powers. This has worked very well for the United States of America. He was one of the most influential among the "Founding Fathers" of the US. 

Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919) 

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States of America. He believed in formulating policies that would benefit an average citizen. He was the man behind the completion of the Panama Canal. He enhanced the reputation of the United States of America in the eyes of the world. He won Nobel Peace prize for his role in ending the war between Russia and Japan. He was not just a politician. He was an explorer, hunter, author, soldier and a naturalist. 

Harry S Truman, Andrew Jackson, Woodrow Wilson and Dwight Eisenhower are some of the other great presidents of this great country. These are the names that make every citizen of the US proud.
