Freelance and recreational writers alike often struggle to find the ideal audience. Many are content to keep their works personal and derive gratification from simply composing pieces that are intrinsically inspired. However, there are just as many writers who crave an audience that will appreciate or critique their work, all to motivate them to become better, more experienced writers.

But what about that segment of the population that simply enjoys writing from time to time and would like to experience a monetary benefit from their efforts? There are creative, intelligent people who enjoy conducting research for their own personal enrichment and also gain satisfaction from documenting their findings in journals and blogs. These people may not consider themselves “writers” or “authors”, but they seem to possess a talent for written articulation that others don’t.

Those individuals who fall into the category of recreational or occasional freelance writers can receive compensation for their written compositions on a regular basis. As I explained in the article How To Make Money as a Freelance Writer, there are many internet websites that are geared specifically to this type of writer and pay content contributors for their work.

Content Brokers

Internet websites that serve as content brokers facilitate communication between clients who pay for written content and the authors who compose content. The pay and fee structures vary, but there is typically an application and testing process that is required for writers to be accepted into such programs. Once approved as a content writer for a broker, writers can earn from 1 cent to 10 cents per word, depending upon areas of expertise and writing skill.

Revenue Sharing Websites

Writing for internet websites that share advertising revenue with contributors is another popular way for freelance and recreational writers to earn money composing content. These websites, which often fit into the category of article directories, pay article authors based on the number of page views and ad clicks that are generated from their published content. The amount of revenue that is generated is greatly impacted by the number of visitors to the published content.

One of the primary benefits of composing content for revenue sharing websites is the freedom to choose article topics. Authors are able to compose original material based on their interests and area of expertise and publish them directly to an established website. Creating unique content that drives internet traffic to the article increases the number of page views and potential ad clicks, which creates greater revenue for the author.

One of the best revenue sharing sites on the web is Experts Column, where authors can sign up and instantly begin publishing their original content. Once the material is published, it is presented on the front page of the website and revenue can be generated immediately. Experts Column also has a social feature where authors can interact, share ideas and promote their content. This unique aspect enhances each author’s ability to market and promote their work for greater earnings.

All nice bits of advice. I think that content brokers/freelance writers tend to make a little more money than people who write for shared revenue sites. But, I think I enjoy writing for shared revenue sites moreso than writing for someone who picks all my topics for me. :P
