If you are a guru of the Internet, or just want to know where a website ranks based off of viewers attracted in total, then alexa.com is a website you must check out. Very recently, I was introduced to this website by a friend and since, I have become enamored with this website. There is no reason I can even begin to think of other than my curiosity. I have always been curious to see if a website actually ranked websites based on viewership and number of times it has been accessed. Some of what I found on alexa.com is general knowledge, but others made my jaw drop.
Alexa.com offers an Internet database that tracks how many views, accesses, and referrals a website receives. Their database is through the roof as they have almost every website on the Internet ranked based on viewership both globally and based on each nationality.
In their search engine, I can type in "expertscolumn.com" and see where it ranks based on viewership compared to other websites on the Internet. According to alexa.com's database, ExpertsColumn ranks 22,895 in the world. But there is more; they also talk about what country and what nationality uses the website most. According to the database, 39% of users on expertscolumn.com are from India, and is most popular respectively in India and in Singapore. It captivates me how one website knows so much about every other one and that it is just public information that be accessed anywhere with an Internet connection.
Alexa.com also makes it easy to figure what websites conquer all others based on their viewership and number of referrals. One would just click on the "Top Sites" tab and most of the ones you will see are not a shock to anybody. Ranked number one is our beloved Google. Ranked number two is Facebook. Ranked number three is Youtube. There are no surprises in store when looking at the top 10. But as you go down the list, more surprises will pop out at you such as the Internet Movie Database (a.k.a. imdb.com) reached as high as #35 and go.com reaching #49 above ask.com and other, more usable search engines.
So maybe I am not crazy to get so much enjoyment looking at alexa.com. The information on that website is endless and priceless. Now I have reached the point where everytime I access a website I usually would not browse to everyday, I open up another tab containing alexa.com and look up its rank. It is not an obsession. It is just something I am curious about and something you might want to consider looking at if you have your own website. Alexa.com is probably one of the most brilliant databases ever conceived and I will tell you that it is a very good source for edification about the Internet.
