Throughout the history of the mankind powerful nations existed and used their power to influence world for their own interests and benefits. However with the passage of time new power centers emerge to replace the ones already on the world stage. These powers carry out military campaigns and occupy or at-least try to occupy other countries for their own motives and reasons. However in the very same world there are a very few countries who have throughout their history successfully defended their sovereignty and have gained notorious reputation for invading armies. One such country is Afghanistan. The most strange thing about Afghanistan is that she is neither very advanced nor a very active player in the world scene even then she somehow ends up in the middle of events that lead to armed conflict. Afghanistan is a country that I call Graveyard of Superpowers. Graveyard not only in the sense that Afghans killed a very large number of invading forces which they did but also in the sense that she became the graveyard for the prestige, honor, arrogance and the morale of the invading force.

During the very recent history it was the British who in nineteenth century invaded to capture Afghanistan. However after furious battles they ultimately had to retreat leaving behind their dead as a reminder for other nations. This graveyard on the Pakistan Afghanistan border still reminds the students of history what happened here and warns the invading nations of the end result. However it seems neither man nor nations learn from history and in the twentieth century a new super power invaded Afghanistan. Soviet Union invaded the Afghanistan and for the next ten years tried to occupy her. One of the most advanced military superpower of her time tried for an entire decade and then accepted defeat and left Afghanistan. Soon after withdrawal the superpower did not even existed on the world map.

Now with the dawn of a new century a new superpower has invaded Afghanistan. USA with the support of her allies made the same mistake previous powers made and entered Afghanistan. Already ten years have passed and except for a few major cities of the country the superpower does not hold much in the Afghanistan. The resistance against USA is growing stronger and stronger and even her allies are now becoming worried about the outcome of the war. USA is even negotiating with the very same people they declared their enemies and have already given deadline for ending the combat operations. The economy of the USA is in its worst shape compared to the last some decades. The domestic pressure on the government is also mounting to end the war and it seems that the US administration has also realized that they cannot win the battle militarily. Only time shall tell and historians shall judge if USA won the war or not and what affect this war shall have on her. Although her economy is much better suited to absorb major economic crisis shall USA survive the economic crisis or she shall also like the Soviet Union disintegrate.

However one thing it seems shall remain the same and that is Afghanistan shall continue to be the graveyard of the superpowers.
