Hindi screen has been adorned by many beautiful film stars. Women who could hold their own in beauty and poise all over the world. One such actress on the Hindi screen was Nimmi. She was a Muslim and her real name was Nawab Banoo. She was born in Agra in 1933. For some time she was sent to Abottabad in Pakistan to be with her grandmother. But she stayed there only for a short time and soon came to Bombay where her aunt Jyoti was an actress.
Nimmi adopted the screen name by which she is known now and opted not to go to Pakistan when India was partitioned. She made a dramatic entry into films when she was espied on the sets of the film Barsaat by Raj Kapoor. He promptly cast her as the second lead in the film and Nimmi never looked back after that.
Her rise to stardom was swift and Nimmi became the loved of the masses. She starred in a string of hits including 5 films with the legendary Dilip Kumar, with whom she formed a winsome pair. She acted and shared the stage with all the big names of Hindi cinema like Raj Kapoor, Shorab Modi, Guru Dutt and Mehboob Khan.
Nimmi married Ali Raza who died in 2005. They had no children, but by all accounts she lived a happy life. He name was romantically linked with Dilip Kumar, but perhaps it was rumor as both denied it. Dilip did acknowledge his love for Madhubala.
Nimmi was upstaged in the sixties and faded away. She made a come back as a supporting heroine , but the sun had set on her. But she left behind fond memories of a lovely girl whom the Indians loved. Nimmi stays at Juhu and does interact with the film world. She deserves all the accolades one can think off.
