The 64th Annual Emmy Awards was televised live on Sunday, September 23, 2012, twice, from five to eleven o’clock in the evening. A skit in the public bathroom of a hotel opened up this awards ceremony. Mindy Kaling, Zooey Deschanel, Christina Hendricks, Kathy Bates, and other women are hanging out in the restroom in burgundy terrycloth robes with gold embroidered logo, while Lena Dunham, seated inside one of the stalls on a toilet and eating cake, was naked. As the other women are making “duck faces” in the mirror, Jimmy Kimmel comes running inside the women’s restroom, crying that he isn’t able to host the Emmys. His eyebrows are raised, similar to a satanic clown eyebrows, and he states that his face looks weird because of botox. The women take turns punching his face back to normal, but he then starts to talk as if he is under mind control to host the show. Julia Louis-Dreyfus enters the restroom to punch him, as well. Since he is standing in his boxer shorts, Ellen DeGeneres enters the restroom to give him her pants.
Live in Los Angeles, California, at the Nokia Theatre, Jimmy Kimmel introduces the Emmy Awards, and highlights some of this evening’s movies and celebrities, before adding that the Emmy Awards is a ceremony that honors narcissistic actors and actresses. He introduces twenty-six-year-old Lena Dunham as the new face in acting, writing and directing, mostly known for her work on the Girls pilot. After the awards ceremony, many celebrities and industry people will attend  the after parties, which include the HBO After Party. He jokingly warns the celebrities not to eat their sliders. He mentions some nominated movies, such as Mad Men and Downton Abbey as well as Barrack Obama’s favorite, Homeland.

A Year in Comedy

Comedians, Amy Poehler and Louis C. K., present an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series to Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family. After his acceptance speech, he walks off stage, via the backstage, and poses with his Emmy on the red carpet, where a flock of photographers and journalists take his picture. He was born and raised in Kansas City. Jim Parsons and Zooey Deschanel present an Emmy for Outstanding Writer in a Comedy Series to Louis C.K., which is his second Emmy as well as his sixteenth nomination. He was born in Washington D.C. A satirical black and white clip, The Breaking Bad Show, combines the movie concept of Breaking Bad and the old television comedy series, The Andy Griffith Show, to display what if this series actually existed. If it had existed, then it would have been sponsored by Meth. Two men are seen walking along a dirt path in the introduction of the original Andy Griffith Show, with the theme song playing in the background. They notice the late Don Knotts fishing in a boat, which is a clip, and one of the men takes out his gun and shoots him.Jon Cryer and a female celebrity present an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series to Julie Bowen of Modern Family. It is her second Emmy in this category. She is originally from Baltimore, Maryland. In her acceptance speech, she talks about the importance of wearing “nipple covers” on television. Matthew Perry introduces the guest actor and actress winners, Jimmy Fallon and Kathy Bates, in a Comedy Series. Kathy and Jimmy present an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Direction to Steve Levitan of Modern Family. Mindy Kaling and Melissa McCarthy present an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Comedy Series to Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men. It is this native New Yorker’s second Emmy as well as his eighth consecutive nomination. Stephen Colbert presents an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series to Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Veep, which is the third Emmy for this NYC native.

A Year In Reality Shows

James Van Der Beek and David Wayan Jr. present an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition to The Amazing Race. The crew accepts their Emmy, as a team. Seth McFarland presents an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Show Host to Tom Bergeron of Dancing With The Stars. It is his first Emmy as well as his fifth nomination for host. A skit, with three characters from Big Bang Theory watching television in a living room set, as they introduced the three CPAs from Ernest & Young who were responsible for counting the Emmy votes.

A Year in Drama

The category highlights popular movies and television series, such as Broadwalk Empire, The Good Wife, House, Mad Men, Once Upon A Time, Homeland, Grey’s Anatomy, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, NCIS, and Dexters, to name a few. A pregnant Claire Danes presents an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series to Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad. It is his second Emmy as well as his third nomination. He is from Idaho. Jimmy Kimmel and Tracy Morgan decide to pull a prank on the public who aren’t watching the Emmys. They tell the television audience to post on their Facebook page and Twitter that Tracy Morgan fainted on stage. Tracy lies still on the floor to pretend that he just had an accident. Hayden Panetiere and Connie Britton question writer’s block by displaying a clip where writers joke about dealing with writer’s block. Then, Hayden and Connie present two Emmys. The Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series goes to Homeland. Three men accept their award. The Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series goes to Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey. She wasn’t there to accept her award. Four men, each dressed in a black and white suit, walk on stage to carry Tracy off the stage floor. Giancarlo Esposito introduces the winners for Best Guest Actor and Actress in Drama Series. Martha Plimpton and Jeremy Davies present an Emmy for Outstanding Directing in Drama Series to Tim Van Patten for his work on Broadwalk Empire. He wasn’t there to accept his award. Host Jimmy Kimmel displays an In Memoriam clip to celebrate his life while he is still alive by displaying clips of his guests on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Josh Groban performs on stage, as background music for his taped clip. Julianne Margulise presents an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series to Damian Lewis of Homeland. It is this London-born actor’s first Emmy and nomination. Tina Fey and Jon Hamm present an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series to Claire Danes of Homeland. It is this NYC native’s second Emmy as well as her third nomination.

A Year in Variety

Aziz Ansari and Jane Levy present an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special—Writing to Louis C.K. of Louis C.K: Live at Beacon Theatre. Ricky Gervais presents two awards. An Emmy for Outstanding Directing for Variety Special—Directing goes to Glenn Weiss. He accepts his award via taped clip for his directing work on the 65th Tony Awards. An Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series goes to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It is Jon’s fourth nomination. Jon accepts his Emmy with his crew.

A Year in Miniseries or Movies

Steve Buscemi presents an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress to Jessica Lange of American Horror Story. She was born in Minnesota. The Emmys Chairman, Bruce Rosenblum, and Ellen Degeneres were on the stage, probably to introduce Bruce Rosenblum to the television audience as he talked about putting together another year of the Emmy. Ellen was standing next to him, to perform in a skit as his satirical sidekick wearing a dark terrycloth robe because Jimmy Kimmel is still wearing her pants. Kerry Washington presents an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie to Tom Berenger of Hatfields & McCoys. Tom was born in Chicago, Illinois.

Ron Howard, the famous child actor who played Opie on The Andy Griffith show as well as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days, presents an In Memoriam of people in the entertainment industry who have died in the past year. I notice Andy Griffith, Davy Jones, Richard Dawson, Sherman Hemsley, Phyllis Diller, Michael Clark Duncan, Chad Everett, Ron Palillo, Robert Hedgys, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, Mike Wallace, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Morgan, Dick Clark, Don Cornelius, and others, which include writers, directors, composer, producers, and a makeup artist. Lucy Lui and Keiffer Sutherland present two awards.An Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Miniseries or Movie goes to Danny Strong for Game Change. And, an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Miniseries or Movie goes to Julianne Moore for Game Change, where she portrayed Sarah Palin. She states that Sarah Palin had given her a “thumbs down” on her performance. All I have to say is, “Good job, Julianna Moore! Keep up the good work!” Julianna was born in North Carolina. Ginnifer Goodwin and Emily Van Camp present two awards. An Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Miniseries or Movie goes to Jay Roach for Game Change. And, an Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actor in Miniseries or Movie goes to Kevin Costner of Hatfields & McCoys. He states that it was a very American movie that was filmed in Romania. Andre Bauer presents an Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie to Game Change. Tom Hanks accepts the award, along with the crew. (Tom Hanks looked younger. I noticed more than usual dark hair on his head as well as a light sun-kissed glow on his face, which made him look ten years younger).

Julianne Moore presents an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series to Homeland, which got nine nominations. The cast and crew accept the Emmy together, as a team.

Michael J. Fox, most known for Family Ties as well as Back To The Future movies, presents an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. When he stood on the stage, he got a standing ovation from the audience. The winner for the best comedy series is Modern Family, which got fourteen nominations this year. The cast and crew accepted their Emmy Award, as a team.

After the Emmy Awards, many celebrities and other industry people attended after-parties as well as red carpet modeling and interviews in the Los Angeles area. Roshumba Williams, a Fashion Commentator, states that the best dressed women included Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Hayden Panetiere, while the best dressed men included Tom Hanks and Jim Parsons. Popular styles included bowties for men as well as sleeveless and shiny gowns with sparkle and shimmer for women. Kerry modeled her shiny silver gown.
