Here are the six must visit spots in North Sumatera:
1. LAKE TOBA (SAMOSIR ISLAND)
It is one of the largest lake in the world. It is a beautiful lake about 4 hour drive from Medan City to Parapat town. From there you already can find the lake and withold the amazing view. From Parapat you can take a boat ride to the Samosir Island located in the middle of the lake. Or if you not fancy it, you can just ride duck boat with paddles near the side of the lake. But it is recommended to take a trip to Samosir island, and try the magic mushroom in there that has been said to make you feel happy. There is even a pizza tavern in that island in the tuk tuk area which is one of the tourist spot.
2. BERASTAGI (Mt. SINABUNG / Mt. SIBAYAK)
Berastagi town is a town located in the mountain, there are two active volcanoes as the main tourist attraction which are Mt Sinabung and Mt Sibayak. Berastagi town is about 2,5 hour drive from Medan City. You can also go to Lake Toba from Brastagi, it takes like another 1 - 1,5 hour drive.
One of the other thing that is interesting from this town is the market filled with fresh fruits, you can also ride a horse or a caravan and there are many stalls selling cooked or roasted Corns.
And you can also visit the theme parks in this area like The Hillpark and Mikie Holiday or drive around Gundaling area for some sightseeing.
3. SIMALEM RESORT (TONGGIN and Sipiso-piso Waterfall).
Located also in a mountaib, this resort is another hour drive from Brastagi town. From this new build resort you can see the view of Lake Toba. The view is just astounding. And from there you can also take a little drive to the beautiful sipiso-piso waterfall and eat some nice seafood in tongging area (near the waterfall).
4. TJONG AFIE HOUSE
This big historic house of Mr Tjong Afie is a landmark and located in Medan City. Tjong Afie was a very successful and respected chinese immigrant and landlord in the old time. His house is one of the most historic house in the entire city and it is preserved for public visit. You must visit this house in order to get the feel and the atmosphere of the old era.
5. The Great Mosque (Mesjid Agung)
It is a HUGE mosque in the city that was build in 1906 by a Dutch architect Dingemans. It has a Moroccan style.
6.ISTANA MAIMUN (MAIMOON PALACE)
Another Landmark of the city is this Maimun Palace. Build in 1888 by Italian architect for the Sultan of Deli. This place is worth visiting for its design that mixed with European and Malay feeling.
Some other place worth visiting include : The Tirtanadi Water Tower (Icon of Medan), The Sudirman Park, London Sumatera Building, and the Merdeka Walk food centre.
