Small Pox

Small pox due its high mortality rate (approximately 30%) has been flagged as a Bioweapon. It is caused by Variola virus. Symptoms include body pain, high fever and fluid filled rashes on the body. Though it has been eradicated completely, some samples of the virus are still present in the medical labs of Russia and United sates of America.
Case study-
During 1763, British forces used this Bioweapon against the Native Americans by introducing an infected blanket in their tribal community. This caused mass death in the tribe.

Nipah Virus

This virus was first discovered in the Nipah region of Malaysia during 1999. It has a very high mortality rate- 50%. It is believed to be transmitted by fruit bats and carried by pigs to humans.
It lasts for 5-10 days and symptoms include fever, muscle pain or even inflammation of brain. Since there are no standard vaccinations until now, it is considered to be a devastating Bioweapon.

Rinderpest

This virus was first discovered during 13th century when Genghis khan invaded Europe. The cattles used by him in his supply trains introduced a fearsome disease that was called Rinderpest. It caused mass livestock death in Europe and caused many farmers to commit suicide
Its symptoms include fever, loss of appetite and dysentery. It lasts for approx. 7-10 days and cause death due to dehydration. USA and Canada have both researched on the use of this virus as an anti-livestock Bioweapon.

Plague

Plague is the disease which engulfed about 50% population of Europe during 14th century- known as the “great dying”. Symptoms include swollen glands around the groin, armpit and neck. High fever, cough and bloody mucous are some other symptoms. It has no vaccination. With appropriate treatment, its mortality rate can be brought down to 5%.
