Many years ago, involved with a local BBS, we put up an Audit Trace after an incursion.  We knew from what telephone number a user dialed, and we tracked every key stroke.  There was link to get into the World Wide Web, and again, every key stroke was captured.  A particular hacker was tracked to his door, and when two big ones knocked, his parents were very upset.
